St. James the Less

Circa 1753/55
Peterskirche (Church of St. Peter), Munich

The saw in the saint's hand is properly an attribute of Simon the Zealot, but this is not the only James the Less image that uses it instead of the more appropriate fuller's club. The saw represented here is like a bucksaw but has a narrower blade. Saws of this kind are sometimes called "felling saws."

The paper in James's right hand says the statue was renovated in 1831 by the gilder Friedrich Spahn and his assistants, whose names are listed.
